How to Get Furniture

Starting January 1, 2026, you will need a referral to schedule a furniture appointment.

Eligibility
Long Island individuals/families experiencing economic hardship, crisis, or recent housing transition and lacking essential furniture.
​​

Referral Process

​

1. Agency/Caseworker Referral (Primary)

  • Agency leadership must contact the ODE Director of Operations to establish partnership and receive a unique scheduling link.

  • Authorized caseworkers then use this link to directly book client appointments online; no separate form is needed.

​

If you have a caseworker, social worker, or agency helping you: 

  • Ask them to schedule an appointment for you through Open Door Exchange's partner system.

  • You can also request an appointment through the form below and include their contact information in your request.

If you're a caseworker, please email our Director of Operations with an introduction to your Program Director to get started.

Don’t have a referral? 

 

2. Community Nomination (Secondary - For Clients Without a Caseworker)

  • An approved professional (see list below) completes a Nomination Form for a client.

  • ODE reviews the nomination; approval is not automatic.

  • If approved, ODE contacts the client to schedule.

Approved Community Nominators:
Must be a verifiable professional with direct knowledge of the client's need (non-familial, non-romantic relationship).

​

Examples Include:

  • Healthcare/Social Services: Doctors, nurses, social workers, therapists, case managers.

  • Education: School counselors, principals, student support staff.

  • Faith/Community: Ordained clergy, outreach directors, tribal elders.

  • Housing/Crisis: Shelter managers, DV advocates, housing caseworkers, care coordinators, property manager, assisted living/senior residence director, or verified landlord (must provide official documentation/verification).

  • Veterans Services: VSOs, VA social workers.

  • Employment/Government: Probation officers, legal aid attorneys, workforce case managers.

 

Not Eligible to Nominate: Family, friends, romantic partners, roommates, or anonymous nominators.

 

We can also connect you with a partner organization to make sure you receive the ongoing support and resources you deserve.

 

We want to ensure that every family and individual in need can move forward with dignity and stability and not return to hardship.

Once your appointment is scheduled, please help us make your visit successful.

Before you arrive:

​

  • Review our Furniture Guide to see typical inventor.

  • Read our Guest Checklist to be fully prepared and time your travel wisely.

  • Plan ahead to obtain a suitable vehicle, helper(s) and any moving supplies (blankets, straps, cords,) to transport your furniture home.

    • You have one week after your initial appointment to pick up your furniture during business hours: Mondays 10am-12pm, Tuesdays 6pm-8pm, and Thursdays 1pm-3pm.

    • We cannot guarantee that volunteers are always capable of helping to lift and/or load furniture into your vehicle. Please bring helpers that know how to lift properly.

At your appointment, our friendly volunteers will greet you and guide you through the warehouse to select items. Please arrive on time for your scheduled appointment slot. Volunteers are unable to stay past business hours, so late arrivals may result in a shortened or rescheduled visit.

How to Get to the Open Door Exchange Warehouse

To reach our warehouse, turn onto Wilson Street and pass Sunshine Laundromat and Xplore Fun Center. Drive into the parking lot for the Port Jefferson Business Center and continue around to the back side of the complex by passing Backstage Studio of Dance and Bond Audio. Our warehouse is a stand-alone building at the very back of the business center.
